‘Went to Work’ … and Got Nothing Done: Chambers for Indiana Responds to U.S. Senator Braun’s Latest Ad

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 29, 2024) – In response to U.S. Senator Mike Braun’s latest television ad, the Chambers for Indiana campaign today released the following statement and fact check:

“U.S. Senator Mike Braun claims he ‘went to work’ on illegal immigration, but in five years, has nothing to show,” stated senior strategist Marty Obst. “That may qualify as ‘work’ in the Washington, D.C., Swamp, but not back here in Indiana. Hoosiers deserve a governor with a real vision for Indiana’s future who can deliver real results. That’s exactly the type of governor Brad Chambers will be.”

U.S. Senator Mike Braun’s ‘Work’

Claim: U.S. Senator Mike Braun “went to work” on illegal immigration.

But: In five years, U.S. Senator Braun has failed to be the sponsor of a single bill to tackle illegal immigration, according to Congress.gov. Of the bills he was a cosponsor on the issue, none have become law.

Claim: U.S. Senator Mike Braun “went to work” “cracking down on the cartels.”

But: In December 2023, U.S. Senator Braun joined U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and other Democrats like Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker to vote against the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024.

The bill included provisions to stop the flow of deadly fentanyl coming across the country’s southern border, increase intelligence gathering on the criminal cartels trafficking fentanyl and require the investigation into China’s involvement in the supply of fentanyl precursor chemicals. It also included a 5.2% pay raise for troops, too.

When he had the chance, U.S. Senator Mike Braun chose not to crack down on the cartels, not to stand up to China’s role in the fentanyl epidemic and not to support our troops.

U.S. Senator Mike Braun’s ‘Plan’

U.S. Senator Braun’s ‘Plan’: “No sanctuary cities.”

But: Current Indiana law prohibits “sanctuary cities” in the state. U.S. Senator Mike Braun has had five years to outlaw sanctuary cities across the country but is now leaving the legislative body that sets federal immigration law.

Brad Chambers will ensure Indiana’s laws are enforced and fully supports SEA 181 (2024), which would allow the attorney general to sue local units of government not currently enforcing Indiana law on sanctuary cities.

U.S. Senator Braun’s ‘Plan’: “Deport criminal illegals.”

But: States can’t deport illegal aliens. U.S. Senator Mike Braun has had five years to change this but is now leaving the legislative body that sets federal immigration policy.

Brad Chambers will ensure Indiana’s current laws are enforced and fully cooperate with federal immigration officials to swiftly remove illegal aliens from Indiana.

U.S. Senator Braun’s ‘Plan’: “More cops on the streets.”

But: U.S. Senator Braun was the sponsor of a bill that would have eliminated qualified immunity for law enforcement, went on Tucker Carlson Tonight to second guess the actions of law enforcement, said the Black Lives Movement is “100% justified” and that he would “probably” join a Black Lives Matter march, if asked. All of which has been damaging to the recruitment, retention and morale of law enforcement.

Brad Chambers will ensure law enforcement has the resources and support they need. That’s why he introduced the Protect and Serve plan.
